You don't coordinate the slots, the airport does. You just have to reserve them
An airport with coordinated slots wants to know in advance who wants to reserve how many gates for the next season.
Hence you have to apply for them before a certain date. Then at a few weeks later, the season starts and you can start scheduling with those slots. (or is it immediately after the reservation deadline?)
As long as you are using your slots, they get autoreserved for the next season.
