I think that, in addition to the "Major Destinations" data, there needs to be a basic level of demand that is auto-generated based on city size, geographical proximity, political factors (such as good diplomatic relations etc.) and economic factors. Perhaps we can designate certain cities as industry hotspots (like Houston or Stavanger for oil, Detroit and Nagoya for automobile, Raleigh and Hyderabad for pharmaceuticals, San Jose and Bangalore for IT etc.), and have a demand multiplier for routes linking such cities?
There is a huge lack of demand data in the game, which is understandable as real-life demand data may be hard to obtain and compile, and in many cases, costs money to obtain. As such, I don't think it should be the only source of demand in the game. It's unrealistic that there's almost zero demand between Colombo and Seoul for example, when there's actually a direct flight between the two.
