I had an idea yesterday, while playing. Why don't we allow player airlines to buy aircraft that got past the drawing board, but were never actually produced, provided that they pay a certain amount of cash/promise to order a certain number of aircraft. This fits more with the older aircraft, when variants were thought up and canceled regularly. The Boeing 727-300, 2707, Douglas MD-12, Hughes H-4, Boeing 417, Boeing Monomail, Douglas DC-4E, etc.
